The Hassan Fathi Award for Architecture 2010

In collaboration with the Architectural Committee of the Supreme Council of Culture, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized the second round of the Hassan Fathi Award on 15 December 2010. This prestigious award is granted to a host of Egyptian architectural projects with the purpose of promoting contemporary Egyptian architecture, as well as encouraging and commemorating contemporary Egyptian architects. More importantly, it aims at immortalizing the name of the late Hassan Fathi, the Alexandrian-born architect, whose ideas created a watershed and rendered him a timeless pioneer. The subjects of this year’s awards were: Low-Cost Housing and Architectural Conservation, in addition to two special awards: Architectural Publications Award and Lifetime Achievement. Twenty-four projects competed for the Low-Cost Housing Award and the Architectural Conservation Award, in addition to seven nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award and sixty different publications and websites in the Archit

The Pillars of Development

The Pillars of Development, is a booklet containing two lectures and two speeches by Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamed, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia. Dr. Mahathir relates his country’s experience in promoting Malaysia from a poor rice-cultivating country into one of the most competitive industrial giants in Asia. In his first lecture, “The Development of Human Resources” he describes how Malaysians, including women, succeeded in promoting education and how they achieved remarkable technological and scientific progress in a very short time while maintaining their Malaysian and Islamic identities. In his second lecture, “Cultural Integration”, he emphasizes the importance of tolerating other views and cultures while preserving one’s identity. The two speeches are about globalization and its impact on Asia and the measures to encourage investment and trade flows.

AFRABIA : From Arabo-Hebraic Divergence to Afro-Arab Convergence

Afrabia: From Arabo-Hebraic Divergence to Afro-Arab Convergence is a lecture by Professor Ali Mazrui who is involved in African politics, published within the Distinguished Lecture Series. The book deals with “the great Semitic divergence” which includes the Europeanization of the Jews simultaneously with the partial Africanization of the Arabs. Mazrui explains the concept of “Afrabia” which connotes an interaction between African and Arab identity, as according to him there are similarities between both such as the prevalence of Islam. Finally, he concludes by foreseeing the emergence of “Afrabia” as an inevitable event linking languages, religions, and identities across the Sahara Desert and the Red Sea in the New World Order.
